History of Minoxidil

Minoxidil was originally developed in tablet form to treat high blood pressure, but scientists discovered an interesting side effect that appeared during human testing: Test subjects were reporting new body hair growth. This finding was the beginning of minoxidil being used in topical solution form for hereditary hair loss. More research ensued with minoxidil topical solutions as a treatment for hair loss, and the results proved that the drug was effective in combating hair loss. Shortly thereafter, Rogaine 5% Minoxidil Solution for Men debuted and in 1992, the Rogaine 2% Minoxidil Topical Solution for Women was introduced into the marketplace.

How Does Minoxidil Work?

Most hair loss is caused by genetics and can worsen if left untreated. Some people even use Minoxidil as a preventive measure because members of their immediate or extended family have experienced pattern hair loss. When minoxidil topical liquid or foam is applied to the hair loss area on the scalp, the solution works by binding to the ion channels in the blood vessels and receptors surrounding the hair follicle – reactivating inactive hair follicles to stimulate hair regrowth. Minoxidil has been clinically proven to regrow up to 25% more hair. It revives and increases the size of hair follicles and extends your hair’s natural growth cycle so you can regrow thicker, fuller hair.

The Main Difference

Women’s 2% Minoxidil is a weaker concentration of Minoxidil compared to the Men’s 5% solution. This is because women react differently to the minoxidil solution and do not need the same concentration of minoxidil solution as men in order to regrow hair. Studies have found that women are more sensitive to the solution and often experience better results than men.

If a woman is using the stronger 5% minoxidil solution, she should only apply the solution once per day. In clinical studies of the treatment of 5% minoxidil on women experiencing female pattern hair loss, participants applied the solution once daily to their scalp and experienced hair regrowth.
